12 Things to Do in Roatan From a Cruise Ship, Ranked by Port Time

12 Things to Do in Roatan From a Cruise Ship, Ranked by Port Time

You have one day on Roatan and a hard deadline called all-aboard. This list is built around that. Every activity below comes with the real time it takes from the cruise pier, so you can pick the day that fits your ship’s hours instead of the one that looks best in a brochure. We run adventure tours next to the Isla Tropicale terminal every ship day, so the timings come from experience, not from a map.

If you do not yet know which port your ship uses, read our Roatan cruise port guide first. Isla Tropicale (formerly Mahogany Bay) and Port of Roatan at Coxen Hole are a 10 to 15 minute drive apart, and that changes the math on everything below.

Under 1 hour, close to the pier

1. Jungle ATV safari through the hills

About 45 minutes on a quad through jungle trails and out toward the beach, a five minute walk from the Isla Tropicale pier. This is the activity for people who want something that feels like Roatan rather than a resort. You get a safety briefing and your gear at check-in, then follow your guide on your own machine. Closed shoes, sunglasses and a change of shirt are the whole packing list: you will get muddy in the wet months and dusty in the dry ones.

Best for: short port calls, first-time riders, anyone who gets bored on a beach by 11 am. See the ATV Jungle and Beach Safari.

2. Zip lining over the canopy

About 55 minutes on our Extreme Zip Line course: 13 platforms and 11 cables strung across 1.8 kilometers of canopy, with runs of 150 to 900 feet at 16 to 65 feet off the ground. Roatan has several zip courses and they vary a lot, so whichever one you choose, ask how many lines it has, how long the longest run is, and how the guides handle braking.

Best for: families and groups with mixed fitness levels. You do not need to be strong, you need to be willing. See the Extreme Zip Line Adventure.

3. Horseback riding through the jungle

About 55 minutes on trails through the reserve, mostly at a walking pace. This is the activity that shows up in the most “best day of the cruise” reviews, because it is calm, photogenic and works for every age, with tickets for children 12 and under up to seniors. Long trousers make the ride more comfortable.

Best for: multi-generational groups, non-swimmers, anyone who wants a slower Roatan. See Horseback Riding.

4. The beach at Isla Tropicale

If your ship is at Isla Tropicale you can ride the chairlift or walk to the terminal’s own beach, which has loungers, cabanas, bars and, since May 2026, a new pool area. It is convenient and it is crowded on two-ship days. Zero travel time, zero planning.

Best for: the morning after a long sea day, or the second half of a day that starts with an adventure.

1 to 3 hours

5. All three: ATV, zip line and horseback in one go

About 2 hours 35 minutes on the ground for all three, in one place, with one check-in. Our Ultimate Adventure Package is what most of our guests end up booking once they realise the three activities sit in the same reserve, so there is no driving between stops and no negotiating with taxis. From Isla Tropicale it fits a standard call with hours to spare for the beach. From Port of Roatan, add about 15 minutes each way on our free shuttle and it still fits any call of 6 hours or more.

Best for: making a single port day count. It is the most booked tour on our site by a wide margin.

6. Two-activity combos

If the full package is too long for your call, pair any two: ATV and zip line, ATV and horseback, or zip line and horseback. Each pair runs about 1 hour 40 minutes to 1 hour 50 minutes. ATV and horseback is our second most popular tour, and the one we suggest for Port of Roatan guests on shorter calls.

7. West Bay Beach

West Bay is the beach in every Roatan photo: a long curve of white sand with the reef close enough to swim to. It is on the far west end of the island, roughly 20 to 30 minutes by taxi from Coxen Hole and longer from Isla Tropicale. Many beach clubs sell day passes that include a lounger and a towel, and the reef at the west end is the best snorkeling from the shore on the island. Budget 3 to 4 hours door to door to make the drive worth it, and leave earlier than you think: the main road back fills up with everyone doing the same sum.

Best for: beach-first passengers on calls of 7 hours or more.

8. Snorkeling the reef

Roatan sits on the Mesoamerican Reef, the second largest barrier reef in the world, and the reef is why divers move here. From a cruise ship the realistic options are a boat snorkel trip from either port (2 to 3 hours all in) or shore snorkeling at West Bay (combine it with number 7). Boat trips reach healthier reef with fewer people. If you have never snorkeled, a guided boat trip is the safer first try.

9. Sloths, monkeys and macaws at an animal park

Several parks let you hold a sloth and have a capuchin climb on your shoulder. Gumbalimba Park near West Bay is the best known. Allow 2 to 3 hours including the drive. Go early: the animals are more active and the queue for the sloth photo is shorter before the midday rush.

Best for: kids, and adults who will say it is for the kids.

3 hours and up

10. Island tour by bus or private driver

A loop of the island’s viewpoints, a beach stop and usually a shopping stop, 3 to 4 hours. Good for seeing a lot with little effort, less good if you want to actually do anything. A private driver costs more than a shared bus and lets you choose the stops.

11. Carambola Botanical Gardens

Trails through a hillside garden near Sandy Bay climb to a lookout over the reef. Plan on an hour of walking plus the drive, so 2.5 to 3 hours in total. It is quiet, shaded and a complete change of pace from the pier. Bring water.

12. Fishing charter

A half-day charter runs about 4 hours, a full day about 8, on a private boat for up to 8 people, so the price is per boat, not per person. It suits a family or a group of friends who fish and have a long call. Check the return time against your all-aboard before you book.

Picking your day: three sample plans

Isla Tropicale, 8 am to 5 pm call. Walk five minutes to our gate for the first Ultimate Adventure Package slot, finish around noon, lunch in the terminal village, beach or pool until 3:30, aboard by 4.

Port of Roatan, 7 am to 3 pm call. Free shuttle to the park (about 15 minutes), ATV and horseback combo (about 1 hour 40 minutes), back at the pier by late morning, shopping plaza and lunch, aboard with time to spare.

Any port, beach-first, 8 hour call. Taxi to West Bay by 9, snorkel and lounge until 1, taxi back by 2. No adventure, no stress, one good beach.

Five things that go wrong on Roatan port days

  1. Ship time vs island time. Roatan runs on Central Standard Time (UTC minus 6) all year. Ships often keep a different time. Know which clock your all-aboard is quoted in. All our tour times are Roatan local time, and we time every tour to your ship.
  2. Booking two things in two places. The island has one main road. Twenty minutes between stops becomes forty on a busy ship day. Pick activities that sit together.
  3. Negotiating taxis at the gate. Agree the total fare, in dollars, before you get in, and ask whether it is per person or per car. A pre-booked pickup removes the whole conversation.
  4. Wrong shoes. Flip-flops do not work on an ATV or a zip platform. Pack sneakers in the day bag.
  5. Cash. Both port complexes take US dollars and cards. Outside them, small vendors prefer small bills. Bring some fives and ones.

Booking direct vs the ship’s excursion desk

The ship sells many of these same activities at a markup, in larger groups. Local operators sell them for less, in smaller groups. We schedule every tour around cruise departures: our gate is a five minute walk from Isla Tropicale, Port of Roatan guests ride a free shuttle there and back, and groups save 10% on 6 to 15 tickets or 15% on 16 or more.

See every tour and how it fits your ship’s hours on our Roatan cruise excursions page, check which ships are in on your day in the cruise ship schedule, or go straight to the Ultimate Adventure Package. Wondering about safety? Read Is Roatan safe for cruise passengers?
